The fourth annual Mr. Marcus pageant, a school tradition, was scheduled for Feb. 27 in the silver gym. However, due to inclement weather, Student Council sponsor Gina Karbs is postponing the event for a later date.
The pageant features 14 boys competing in three categories: talent, swimwear and formal. There will also be an opening dance number performance, as well as performances by the Marquettes and Fusion.
The pageant came to be when the senior advisory council was coming up with ideas for fun events to raise money for the school four years ago.
“We thought it’d be pretty funny if we put guys in a pageant,” senior class student council president Lauren Barnard said.
To get into the pageant, the boys had to fill out an application packet and turn it into student council sponsor Gina Karbs. Student council officers, including Dana Schultz, teach the boys a dance and prepare them for the pageant.
“They have a bunch of practices and they have to learn a full dance and a talent to perform,” Schultz said.
Some of the talents this year include ballet, singing, dancing, air guitar and rapping. Last year, one of the craziest talents was when Zane Rutledge dressed up in a fox costume and performed the popular song, “What Does The Fox Say?”
Judges for the pageant are student council alumni from the last five or six years so that they have no affiliation with the boys. The judges narrow down the contestants until they choose a winner.
“If you win Mr. Marcus you get $500 in a scholarship,” Barnard said.
Mr. Marcus has been a great success in its past performances, filling up the auditorium in the past four years. Last year’s winner was Logan Plunkett.
“We had a great turnout and everyone was laughing the whole time,” Barnard said.
