Boys’ basketball victory against Hebron

The Marcus boys’ basketball team brought home a win last night against district rival Hebron. The Marauders beat the Hawks with a final score of 61-58, moving them into first place in a very competitive district. Marcus had the lead for the majority of the game, coming out on top at the end of each quarter. Although they never trailed, the now 19-2 Marauders needed a game winning shot to clinch the game.

The game heated up in the last thirty seconds when the score became tied 58-58 on a layup by Hebron. Guard Xavier Adams hit the game winning three point shot in the final second, securing the win for Marcus. Although he was on the bench due to foul trouble for much of the game, Adams delivered in the final moments. Adams said he was unaffected by the pressure because he never doubted the team would pull out the win, even if it was after regulation.

“If I missed it, we would’ve won it in overtime,” Adams said.

Junior guard Michael Mayhew was the team’s top scorer with 24 points. Senior guard Jack Holden came in second with 17 points for the home team. Senior forward Chad Elliot said that the win came by contributions from everyone.

“It was a team win… we just came together.” Elliott said.

Now on that his team sits atop District 5-5A, head coach Clay Cody said is not too worried about the district game against Denton-Ryan this upcoming Tuesday. He said that preparation will be the key to a victory against the Raiders.

“We’re going to show up [to practice] tomorrow and just do what we do,” Cody said.
