Class allows students to explore interests in teaching
For most, elementary school is just a memory. The air smelled of crayons and bagged lunches and the desks still had compartments. It is a place that many high school students haven’t visited since puberty. But for a select few, local elementary schools are visited multiple times a week.
The class, Ready Set Teach, offers students the chance to experience teaching their own class. Students visit elementary schools during first period every Monday through Wednesday and teach their own lesson plans.
“It’s a class to take in case you’re interested in teaching,” Ready set teach member, junior Oksana Braun said. “It gives you a view of teaching.”
The class contains 34 students, each of which is assigned to their own class. Most pick their old teachers and teach at their old elementary schools. Before their classes, the students have to prepare what they’re going to teach. They can choose lessons regarding math, science, reading and any other topics.
“For the class we have to come up with lessons for a subject,” Braun said. “Just recently I taught them a lesson about graphing.”
According to Braun, teaching at her old school is a unique experience.
“It’s really interesting,” Braun said. “Some of the teachers remember me, but some of them don’t. So it’s really cool.”
Another highlight, according to Braun, is the students that she is able to teach. The kids are at an impressionable age and their reactions allow her to see how her teaching skills can impact other’s lives.
“They’re really cute,” Braun said. “They’re surprisingly eager to learn.”
The students lessons are observed by the teacher, and students are later given feedback regarding the good and bad things about their performance.
“After you teach a lesson, your teacher is supposed to write a review on how you taught it,” Braun said. “And that’s really fun, because it shows you what you need to improve and what you’re doing well.”
As the students experience teaching and learn what they need to improve upon, they are able to find out if they want to pursue teaching as a future career. Ready Set Teach let’s students prepare for their futures while still in high school.
“It gives you an introduction,” Braun said. “It’s like, If you can handle this class, and you actually enjoy being in the class then you should teach.”
