“Whose Line is it Anyway” was a popular TV show in its day, much-loved by many people. The show consisted of several actors coming up with scenarios and improvising them out. A group that takes on a similar style of performance is the Improv Troupe, which even goes so far as to interact with their audience.
The Improv Troupe’s first major performance is Thursday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. In February, the cast will also begin accepting new members as the seniors begin to leave for college.
The Improv Troupe is a new improvisational performing arts club that meets twice a week and performs at events and shows. The cast drops the script and improvises, making their performance up as they go, as opposed to memorizing lines. They also interact with their audience and make them apart of the performance.
Tyler Stern, junior, is a member of the cast and said that the club is very flexible and open for discussion among members. Students are allowed to work with creative freedom and choose the directions in which they want to take their activities and performances. They have the say in where the group goes.
“It’s really neat because we get to make a lot of the decisions,” Stern said. “We take it where we want to take it, and [the decisions] are up to the group.”
They prepare for this during the meetings by playing games, warming up for the first 30 minutes of their meeting and spending the rest of the time working towards important performances. They also accept donations during their performances.
Senior member Jake Herrel said that the intentions of the group are to have as much fun as possible. He also said that the group works very well together.
“They never cease to amaze me,” Herrel said. “Sometimes I have to pinch myself because I can’t comprehend how talented people are. When they perform, magic happens.”
Herrel also said a goal of the Improv Troupe was to make the audience’s weeks more enjoyable.
“I want them to leave the show with a smile on their face,” Herrel said. “We want them to go beyond the room talking about what they’ve seen.”
