Sushi has become a trendy new food in the last few years. With the addition of Sushi Yaa in Highland Village, typically expensive sushi has grown in popularity even more among teens. The Marquee compares three different sushi restaurants in the area.
Piranha Killer Sushi (Flower Mound)
Piranha Killer Sushi is a very modern and lively Asian restaurant in front of Dick’s Sporting Goods on FM 2499. The contemporary interior design of the restaurant reflects the unique twist the chefs take on traditional Asian cuisine. For instance, instead of serving the generic Philadelphia roll, Piranha puts its own spin on it. They still include the basics, smoked salmon and cream cheese, but also add masago, a type of fish egg, and a sweet and a wasabi sauce drizzled on top. Although it is known mostly for its sushi and rolls, Piranha also has other Asian-inspired cuisine, such as the blue crab fried rice and chicken teriyaki.
As far as actual sushi quality goes, Piranha is above average but is not the best. Some fish can be chewy or have a strong, not-so-fresh taste. The price is compatible with the size and quality of the fish. Piranha is cheaper than high-end sushi restaurants but the quality suffers slightly in effect. The restaurant is also a bit loud. Overall, however, Piranha Killer Sushi attacks its cuisine from a more creative and non-traditional way than the typical sushi bar. It combines good and non-mainstream food with a fun and younger atmosphere for customers. Try the Tri-Color Sashimi roll, which has tuna, salmon, white tuna, chives, and crab inside of hand-sculpted cucumber, giving it a delicious and fresh taste.
Edohana Sushi (Flower Mound)
Edohana Sushi, located at the corner of Long Prairie Road and Flower Mound Road, is a slightly more upscale Asian restaurant. The atmosphere is more laid back and the dim lighting gives it a more expensive feel. Although there are other Edohana locations that have hibachi tables, the Flower Mound location only has a sushi bar. However, there is also other Japanese dishes available from the kitchen, like chicken teriyaki and vegetable tempura.
The overall food quality and quantity is superior and the sushi quality is superb. However, the price reflects this. For example, a piece of Salmon sushi at Edohana costs $3.95, whereas the same fish at Piranha costs $2.50. Overall, Edohana has the best sushi and rolls out of the three restaurants. The culinary creations are more traditional than Piranha but the flavors are nonetheless exceptional. Try the Temptation Roll, a shrimp tempura roll with cream cheese and cucumber, topped with crab and four sauces that would make anyone’s taste buds go crazy.
Sushi Yaa (Highland Village)
Sushi Yaa is a modern sushi buffet on FM 407. The atmosphere is almost futuristic, with techno music and retro-looking seats and tables. It is $10 for the buffet, which includes unlimited sushi rolls and other items, such as fried rice and Edamame. Although the price is much better than Piranha and Edohana, you get what you pay for. The quality of the food is far lower than Piranha and Edohana. For instance, the sushi grade is not high. Many of the rolls utilize low quality fish and imitation crab, two inexpensive items. The food just seems cheaper in general.
Considering the fact that it is a buffet, however, the food is relatively good. However, it all depends on what type of dinner you are looking for. If you are looking to have a legitimate sushi dinner, Sushi Yaa isn’t the place for you. But if you want a cheap alternative that is still tasty, Sushi Yaa is perfect. Overall, while the quality of food is not high, there is a good variety of rolls to choose from, such as the Rainbow roll, which is a California roll topped with assorted fish. It is definitely worth the money, especially if you have a big appetite.
