After a long and unpredictable offseason, the football team is back on the field and ready for the 2020 season. They played their first game of the year last night against the Prosper Eagles. Since it was a scrimmage, no score was kept.
Last year the Marauders had an impressive 9-1 record and won both rivalry games. The team then went on to win two playoff games and were named as the 2019 district champions. While Head Coach Kevin Atkinson hopes to continue that success, he is looking at the 2020 season as a fresh start.
“It’s a new team, a new year,” Atkinson said.
While Atkinson had high praise for his team roster overall, he highlighted the abilities of the wide receivers and quarterbacks.
“They will be a force to reckon with,” Atkinson said.
However, the team is still figuring out what a few positions will look like before their first official game, which is scheduled for next Friday Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Marauder Stadium. They will be playing the Jesuit Rangers.
“I’m very interested to look at our running back situation and our offensive line situation,” Atkinson said.
While COVID-19 will bring some challenges throughout the season, the team is prioritizing their health with hopes of a full season ahead of them.
“We are going to do everything in our power,” Atkinson said. “I’m wearing a mask. They are wearing a mask. Just the typical things we think we should always follow.”
