The fall golf season is in full swing. Head coach Kerry Gabel said the season is going well and that he is very pleased with both the boys’ and girls’ teams. So far the boys have placed highest in the Cleburne Fall Classic on Oct. 5-6. The team took first place, led by sophomore Dustin Lewis, who also finished first overall.
He shot a 74 on day one and a 67 on day two. Lewis is the current team leader with a tournament scoring average of 73.25. According to sophomore varsity golfer Andrew Spear, the boys and girls combined to set five new school records in their last tournament.
The girls’ varsity squad has been led by senior Hayley Dambold, who has a tournament scoring average of 73.25. The lady Marauders placed highest in the Cleburne Fall Classic with a first place finish. Dambold took the individual first place medal, as she shot a 74 on day one and a 72 on day two.
Although Coach Gabel is pleased with the performance of his players thus far, he also acknowledged that the two teams have both strengths and weaknesses.
“As a team we have a strong sense of team chemistry,” Gabel said. “Also, our depth of young golfers is a positive.”
While the large number of young golfers is great for the future, Gabel also views it as a downfall.
“We have a very talented group of kids,” Gabel said. “But the inexperience of playing with the better teams in the state is a major weakness.”
Sophomore Andrew Spear says that strong points and weak points vary from player to player.
“We all have our own strengths and weaknesses,” Spear said, “We just work to make our weaknesses our strengths to where we all become well-rounded [players].”
Both teams hope to continue their winning ways. The boys will be in action next at the Fast Freddy Invitational Nov. 16-17 at Bridlewood Golf Course and the girls will next play in The Texas Two-Step Nov. 9-10 at Mansfield International and Southern Oaks Golf Courses.
