Adjusting his large green hands, he stood out of view of the audience. The band began playing, and the melody danced throughout the auditorium. The large, thick red curtain opened revealing the stage that would hold his biggest performance.
He took a breath, and walked out onto the side stage. Immediately, the children in the crowd pointed, their smiles growing as they recognized the ogre. He opened his
mouth, and began to share the backstory of Shrek.
Sophomore Jonah Pfeiffer will be dressing up again tonight as America’s favorite ogre in the school’s production of Shrek the Musical. Preparation for this show began in late October of last year.
What may surprise some people about Pfeiffer is that he was chosen as the main character since he was not a part of theater or choir. However, he says he loves acting, and he actually started acting in middle school.
”When I first started it, I thought it would be a fun hobby,” he said. “Now it’s my entire life.”
This is the first play Pfeiffer has been involved with theatre in high school, but a friend recommended that he audition. He was nervous about the audition, but he was helped by some of the theatre veterans.
“[Auditioning] was scary, they gave each of us a song depending on which character you were trying out for,” he said. “I was nervous, I was worried about the quality of my singing and acting.”
Six days later he was contacted and given the part.
“I’m super excited to be in this show,” he said. “And that I’m grateful to everyone that’s helped me out along the way. And i hope that everyone enjoys it.”
